We’ve read your comments, done some research, and are ready to share our new must-reads list with you! There are two documents you can download. The first document lists each book with its “hunger games similarity rating” and a brief description. There are 25 books in this document. They are listed in alphabetical order by the author’s last name.

The next list has the same books as the other list. However this list tells why the books received the ratings they did. It shows the same categories as listed in our “25 Series to Read if You Love the Hunger Games” post. Then on the last page there are 46 more books that were recommended, but were not compared to The Hunger Games using the 8 categories. That means this file contains 71 books (some series, some not) to read!! Wow! Who even knows how many books that is when you include the sequels that follow?!

Oh goodness! As a middle school librarian, I’m thrilled that this list is available to print! Thank you so much for sharing it! It’ll be printed out in full color, laminated & prominently posted in the library. I often recommend the Uglies Trilogy and the Matched Trilogy is popular with The Hunger Games fans. There are many titles on this list that are on my “I’m gonna read these soon, okay maybe on Spring Break, no wait that’s next week already…ugh…definitely BEFORE 2015″ list. ^_~. Hope you both (and your families) have a blessed Easter! God Bless ♥ ~Marianne

Amazing – I really identified with Ember and felt like I witnessed her growing up and becoming an independent, strong woman that is a character worth following!

What a great list! You two composed this yourselves? I’m impressed! Loved Hunger Game series, the movie… Divergent was so good too. Ready Player One is really good too. Love your blog!
Although I haven’t read the series, this movie has dfienetily left an impression on me!! I have the sudden urge to get all three books and read them… I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL THIS MOVIE’S OUT!!!!!
Being a middle school librarian I’ve read most of the books on your list and they’re great. You might want to add Z for Zachariah by Robert O’Brien, River Rats by Carolyn Stevemeyer, Empty by Suzanne Wynn, The Compound by S.A. Bodeen and The Girl Who Owned a City by OT Nelson. Enjoy they were great long before Hunger Games.
Z for Zachariah is a classic. Brilliant book. Had forgotten about that one!
You absolutely cannot forget Cinder by Marissa Meyer:

Survival: Yes, later in the series
Love Story: Yes
Action-Packed: Definitely
Revolt: Yes
Girl Protagonist: Yes, in every book
Series: Yes, 4 books plus short stories

If you are able to add one more book, Starters by Lissa Price was just released last month. Take a look at the book trailer: http://youtu.be/zvNUsW1CItY. It meets all of the Hunger Game criteria and appeals to girls and boys, young teens, and young adults. The sequel, Enders, is due out in December.
Thanks for a great list! I ended up reading ‘Divergent’, ‘Delirium’, and ‘Pandemonium’ and couldn’t put them down. I loved them even more than The Hunger Games!!
You might want to check out the Skinned (Skinned Trilogy) by Robin Wasserman.
is the poster copyrighted or can I print it out into a huge poster?
You can print whatever size you like! Just dont claim it as your own, or remove our web address. Glad you like it!
I LOVE the “Tomorrow” series by John Marsden! I first read those books when I was in middle school… about 14 years ago! They are amazing! This is the first day I’ve been to your blog and I can tell you, now that I’ve seen you post this amazing book, you definitely have a new fan in me!
Perhaps the Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody would fit into your list too – it meets all of your criteria and I haven’t seen it on any of your lists!
Obernewtyn is #1, and there are 7 so far… ?? (different number in different countries…)
No Battle Royale? All credibility lost.
Love your list. It is missing a great book. Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower will be on your list as soon as you read it…….hope to see it added soon!
Ashfall by Mike Mullin – awesomeness!
Question, when you list THE BLACK JEWELS, are you referring to the fantasy series by Anne Bishop? If so, you might want to make mention that it’s definitely not a middle grade novel and calling it YA might be a stretch.
Same comment as Jackie said about The Handmaid’s Tale. It isn’t really YA but shouldn’t be too difficult of a read for more mature teens. Also, I noticed it was listed as part of a series and as far as I know it isn’t (I wish).
Thanks for the list! I love dystopian future books and am going to be looking up a few from the list that I haven’t read yet.
“Maximum Ride” by James patterson is fantastic and divergent is just as good, another great series was the harry potter series
Ive been told to read the uglies series, is it good
It IS good!
The uglies series is one of the best books ive ever read along with the giver the hunger games among the hidden city of ember to kill a mockingbird and so much more!
How about the maximum ride series by James Patterson? My absolute FAVORITE books (next to the hunger games)
Blood Red Road is an amazing book! i might even like it better than the hunger games!
The Divergent series and the Enclave series by Ann Agguire is awesome.
Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody is a really good book too, very strong emotions, and alot of mystery and action too.
Futuristic: Yes
Survival: Yes
Love Story: Yes, later on in the series
Action Packed: Yes
Revolt: Yes
Girl protagonist: Yes
Series: Yes, over 4 in the series
YA: Yes
Pingback: Divergent a must read for Hunger Games fans | KingZone – The King’s College Library Blog
Hello! I LOVE the list you guys made! Ever since I read the Hunger Games, I have been trying to figure out books like it. One book that I highly recommend is Night by Elie Wiesel (1st in trilogy). He is not only a great writer, but a Holocaust survivor. Night is his autobiography of when he was in Auschwitz at 13 yrs. old, whereas the other two are just biographies.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED DIVERGENT AND INSURGENT!!!!! I think more so than the hunger games. But now I have a problem because when I try to read other books, I keep picturing them as I pictured the characters in divergent. (cuz that how much i love four). SO now I cant read anymore until I stop obsessing! I read Graceling (and loved it) but unfortunately Po ended up looking like a softer version of four!
